What is 3DS?

Modified on Wed, 10 Sep at 10:35 AM

3D Secure (3DS) is an additional security layer for online card payments. It is triggered during checkout when the card-issuing bank requires extra authentication from the cardholder (for example, SMS code, BankID, or app approval).

Who decides if 3DS is used?

The decision is made by the issuing bank, not by Mondido or you as the merchant. In some cases, the bank chooses not to require 3DS, and the payment goes through without this extra step.

What can merchants do?

Even though you cannot force 3DS, you can add your own controls.
For example, you may check the cardholder’s name:

  • Flag unusually short or incomplete names

  • Review suspicious formats that might indicate fraud

By combining bank decisions with your own checks, you reduce the risk of fraudulent transactions.
